Wastewater treatment

The PHYTOREM® solutions permit to treat various types of wastewater:

  • Domestic wastewater: hotels, campsites, retirement homes, housing estates, isolated infrastructures, etc.
  • Industrial wastewater: food and farming industries : wine production, animal breeding, cheese dairies, industrial bakeries, wildlife parks, etc.
  • Leachates: composting areas, waste collection centers, landfills, etc.
  • Stormwater: roads, shopping malls, economic activity zones, etc.

Domestic wastewater is generally characterized by a moderate organic pollution, an excess of nutrients and a significant water/hydrous flow.

It is also characterized by a good  biodegradability.

Extensive solutions for large areas

The extensive solutions work on existing soil and are based on the optimization of the interactions between the climate, the soil and the plants.

These solutions consist in establishing on existing soil bamboo plantations controlled by a rhizome barrier.

They are designed depending on the relationships between climate/soil/wastewater and on the discharge objectives.

This type of solutions run on solar energy and meets several different objectives:

  • The “zero discharge” performance into surface water environment,
  • The compliance with discharge standards for infiltration water,
  • The sequestration of CO2: an 1 hectare mature bamboo plantation absorbs approximately 30 tons of CO2 per year,
  • Biomass production.

Intensive solutions for limited areas and/or complex pollutions

The PHYTOREM® intensive solutions are adapted to limited and small areas and or complex pollutions. They are on selected substrate and are particularly adapted to the industrial sector.

These solutions are optimized thanks to oxygen input and the control of the selected materials.

They permit collecting wastewater treated on limited areas.

This type of solutions is the subject of an ambitious project supported by Europe on behalf of Refresco, a leading manufacturer of soft drinks and juices (www.briterwater.eu)

Joint solutions for high discharge constraints

The joint solutions are the combination of intensive and extensive solutions. They are adapted to strict discharge standards.

They guarantee treatment efficiency on organic parameters but also on nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and avoiding any water surface discharge.

“Dissipation area” solutions to limit the impact on receiving environment

The “dissipation area” solutions can be implemented to any type of wastewater treatment plant. In addition to its dissipation role, the bamboo plantation reduces significantly residual pollution.

These solutions are adapted to limit discharges into surface water environment. A diffuse/dispersed discharge on a large area permits limiting the impact on the receiving environment (buffer zone).

Industrial wastewater is generally characterized by a significant organic pollution (>2 g/L COD) associated with a lack of nutrients and/or an imbalance between elements (nitrate-phosphorus-potassium) and a pH variation.

Stormwater are composed of runoff from roads, car parks, activity zones, waste centers, etc… caused by precipitation (rain, shower, storm, snow removal, etc.). These runoffs generally have low organic contamination and contain hydrocarbons, salts, heavy metals and small soil particles.

Mexico: Mr François Hollande, French President, visits the Airbus Helicopters wastewater treatment plant.

The 11th of april of 2014, the President of the French Republic, Mr. François Hollande, visited in Airbus Helicopters Queretaro, the first Mexican wastewater treatment plant using the Bambou-Assainissement® process designed by Phytorem SA.
